[Transcript] Do I really need a coach? As I mentioned in the ADHD Catch 22 video, there's a lot of resources available for ADHD and executive function challenged people. There's books, there's apps, there's cognitive behavioral therapy, there's coaching, of course. And of course there's meds. Now for many people, meds are a godsend and utterly critical for a functional life.
For many others, it's a much more fraught issue but regardless of your take on medication there's a saying in ADHD circles and that is "pills don't teach skills". That is to say, you have spent your whole life acting and reacting and operating and behaving in certain ways and simply taking medication isn't going to magically change some of your most disruptive behaviors.
Meds often just make it so that you can change the behaviors. And in fact, many people who take medication for ADHD and don't do much of anything else often become what I call "the very attentive and alert dysfunctional". The fact is, many of the other non medication interventions are about unwinding a lot of those most disruptive behaviors and replacing them with skills of a functional life.
But why coaching and not one of the other ways? It comes down to this; How directly and efficiently do you want to address this? Because think about it, when you're dropping the ball in the other arenas of your life, and time and opportunities are slipping through your fingers because you're struggling just to keep it together, what is more important than putting down the gun you're shooting yourself in the foot with? Removing all of the tripwires and banana peels that are spread around your life.
What is a coach but an advocate that's always in your corner? An accountability partner who helps you to get back on track when you inevitably fall off. Somebody who knows the ropes, knows what usually works, what usually doesn't, but also knows that they may need to help you find solutions that are unique to you.
At the end of everything, all the interventions, the medication, the apps, the books, the therapy, they're all about repairing your broken tools for managing your life. But the goal should not be to spend all of your time and energy in this life simply repairing your tools for managing your life.
Ultimately, the goal should be to simply have a working set of tools for managing your life so that you can just live and become the person that you know you were meant to be.
