[Transcript] The ADHD Catch 22. So first of all, what is a Catch 22? It's the title of a book by Joseph Heller, but that's not important. The central idea behind it is that of a circular paradox. You can't do A until you get B done, but you can't do B until you get A done. It's an inescapable circular paradox. The ADHD Catch 22 is that you were born with a broken set of tools for living and managing your life. The way to fix those tools is generally with a working set of the same tools for living and managing your life.
Now, can you address this yourself? Can you manage this on your own? And the answer is, for some people, yes, or partially, or maybe, maybe not. There are books out there, there are programs, there's apps galore, there's neurofeedback, there's cognitive behavioral therapy.
Perhaps you've tried some of them. Perhaps that's why you're here. You have to ask yourself and know yourself. Are you going to read the book, see the program through, implement one month out, three months out, six months out? These things will take time. Are you going to get yourself back on the horse when you inevitably fall off? You're human after all.
I call this the scenic route. It's usually a pretty bumpy road and you will be visited upon by what I call the four horsemen of executive function disorder / ADHD. And that is 1. motivational whiplash here. One moment, but kind of gone. The next is number 2, which is crippling overwhelm. Usually needs no introduction. I think we're all pretty familiar with that one. 3, self loathing that comes with dropping the ball, picking it back up, dropping the ball, forgetting, dropping the ball again... You get the idea. And 4, the king daddy of them all, anxiety.
Now, there is a much more personalized and much more focused way of doing this. And it basically splits into cognitive behavioral therapy and coaching. To be sure, coaching involves a lot of CBT techniques. But CBT therapy is different. You're going to get into your past, you're going to examine motivations, etc, etc, It's therapy. Coaching is much more purely forward focused. Regarding what path you end up choosing, I will leave you with this.
It has been my observation during the course of my life, I've known and worked with many people over the years, that the happiest and the most successful people I know are generally those people who identify when they need help with something, they seek out that help, and they allow themselves to accept it.
